I once had this great idea ripped from artist BenCab....to have a "Birthday Show".
BenCab and I were born on the same day. Obviously not the same year.
One April evening in 2002, BenCab held his "Birthday Show" entitled "Homage to Sabel" (painting at right by BenCab showing Sabel) at the Luz Gallery. An hour and a half into the show, I somehow summed up 1.5 million in sales of artwork. These were all for paintings dated 2002. Ergo, for all the paintings done from January 1 to March 31, 2002, he was able to sell 1.5M worth by mid-April!
I wanted to have a birthday show this year, on my 40th birthday. I guess that would have really been a tall order for someone who did not paint anymore regularly.
So here I am again, attempting to shoot for a birthday show.
My biggest fear in 2009 will be that by January, I'll be busy with work again and that plans for a show will be obliterated into smithereens.
I only hope I can strike the balance.

I love Bencab's women. So beautiful. But my cousin who collects paintings doesn't think so. Too bland daw.
ReplyDeleteRe the show? I would like to quote my good friend. it happens when it happens. :)
elegant women =) take it easy, it just happens.
ReplyDeleteon second thought, you can always move your 40th birthday harharhar
ReplyDeleteFor me mounting a show is like loosing weight. Kailangan ng sheer willpower. Everyday, I force myself to pick up a brush or pencil to do a study or paint. I can't rely on my muse dahil my show will never happen if i give in to the complacency that i can do it tomorrow, or I'll do it when I have the urge to. And not all works are winners, I could only try. Pero napansin ko, the very hardest steps are the first few moments from getting out of my artistic rut, and the engine of creativity runs again. I believe it can be done allot 2-3 hrs a day painting. We can always cut corners in our time management. Marami akong kilala na painters who manage a business, who are also fathers, still paint and attend openings of shows pa! Gaya ng sabi ni topax Colayco sa book niya, kahit minimum wage earner ka, kaya mo mag save kahit 5 pesos a day. Kaya mo 'yan! Gawin mo na ngayon! Disiplina lang :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the push :-)
ReplyDeleteHow did you learn to paint? One of my 2009 resolutions is to finally take painting lessons. I have already told my husband that that is the gift I want from him. Para matuloy na after all these years of dreaming about it only.
ReplyDeletePost some of your works to inspire me and others like me who want to discover their creative sides.
